Merging the traditional practices of business recruitment with a reality television format, Actuality Entertainment conceived and developed The Prodigy, Opportunity Knocks. A subsidiary of Firstline Security, a security solutions firm based in Orem, Utah, Actuality Entertainment utilized the expertise of its parent company in the area of recruiting, a recurring and significant challenge in the sales industry. With the competitive search for quality candidates leading to outrageous recruiting and signing bonuses of five figures, Firstline executives devised the concept and created Actuality Entertainment to bring it to fruition.
The Prodigy evolved into a sales competition during which young participants competed in selling Firstline Security products and completed other tests of business skills. Actuality Entertainment hired 17 film school graduates as the show’s field camera crew and selected approximately 2,000 contestants, training them to sell Firstline products and sending them to sales territories around the country to apply that knowledge. The company filmed more than 80 hours of footage for The Prodigy, including recruiting efforts, job interviews, interactions in corporate housing, and competition in business skills.
The footage also covered the judging process and awards ceremonies. Under Actuality Entertainment’s oversight, different guest judges assessed each business-skills competition. The Firstline Security Board of Directors selected the ultimate winner, based on sales numbers and skills assessments. Actuality Entertainment declared Jordan Folsom the ultimate prodigy. At the awards presentation in Hawaii, he received $300,000 and a new car.
The Prodigy by Actuality Entertainment never made it to television. Shortly after the competition concluded, Firstline Security closed. During a liquidation of the company’s assets, hard drives holding the reality television show’s footage were inadvertently lost. The company still owns the intellectual property rights to The Prodigy.
